The MOTIF Editor/Monitor makes job scheduling easier by offering the user a versatile icon based graphical environment when using a DECWindows workstation. The MOTIF Editor/Monitor features a MOTIF interface utilizing representative icons which perform major tasks when selected. Jobs are displayed as icons in a separate job group. Interdependencies between jobs are displayed as lines connecting the icons. A typical graphical display is shown in Figure 1-1.

This chapter will present an overview of the components and operation
of the MOTIF Editor/Monitor. The main objectives and features of the
program will be described as well as concepts which are relevant to
it's operation. A more comprehensive, item by item description will
appear in the following chapters.
1.1 Starting the MOTIF Editor/Monitor
The MOTIF Editor/Monitor is available to users of DECWindows work stations and X terminals running an X server. 1.2 What is the MOTIF Editor/Monitor ?
While SCHEDULE is an excellent way to automate job submission, the program takes on a whole new dimension when used with the MOTIF Editor/Monitor. The Editor allows you to edit all aspects of job characteristics and behavior. The Monitor allows you to monitor your jobs, displaying a real time representation of the current job activity.
The vast majority of SCHEDULE functions are available using the MOTIF Editor/Monitor. In fact, there is no need to use the DCL command line or MCL interface versions if you would rather use the MOTIF Editor/Monitor.
Figure 1-2 highlights the four areas of interaction within the MOTIF Editor/Monitor.
