Glossary

The following terms are used throughout the MOTIF Work Center manual.

add media: To add additional media to the MEDIA database.

allocated pool: Refers to media that have been assigned to a particular user.

assign media: To assign a medium to a username for personal use.

available pool: Refers to media which are available for assignment to users.

backup job: Refers to a process that copies data to media that is then used to store that data for possible later use.

BCKMGR: The Backup manager portion of the MOTIF Work Center . Used to manage the submission of time critical jobs.

button: A selectable field that is left-clicked to select an item in MOTIF.

catalog media: To enter an existing media(usually containing data) into the MEDIA database for use by MEDIA.

choice button: A button that displays a list of choices used to fill in a form field automatically.

compose button: A method of filling in form fields using a series of slide controls that allow the user to set a specific date or time offset.

form fields: An area of a MOTIF dialog box that allows entry of data either by manual fill in or an automated fill in process.

incremental backup: A backup of all data not previously backed up in a prior backup.

left-click: To depress the left button of the mouse while the cursor is over an element of the MOTIF Work Center .

MEDIA: The Media Management portion of the MOTIF Work Center . Tasks such as tracking location and contents to changing access privileges and organizing media into pools are performed in MEDIA.

media: Any of variety of tapes, disks, CD, jukebox etc. referred to in the media database.

media contents: The media contents is the listing of files associated with a medium. This is stored in the media database.

media header: A comprehensive database of information pertaining to a medium. Contains information relevant to the medium's physical characteristics as well as dates, access rights, operation status etc.

media job: A job associated with a medium that is stored with the job in the MEDIA database.

medium: The singular form of the plural media.

MOTIF Work Center: The MOTIF/DECWindows based interface utilizing dialog boxes, menus, scrolling lists, mouse clicks etc. detailed throughout this manual.

off-line: Refers to media that are not mounted on the system currently. Usually tapes.

online: Refers to mounted media. Can be tape, disk, CD, jukebox etc.

pull down menu: A list of selections that are displayed by clicking on a box which displays a drop down in MOTIF.

queue: A line of jobs to be processed in a certain order. MEDIA uses a variety of queues including job queues and print queues.

radio button: A selectable button used to toggle data on or off.

release media: Places media in the released pool.

released pool: Refers to media that were previously allocated to a user but are no longer needed.

rename media: Change the name of media or a medium.

reuse media: Places medium in the available pool after a user released it to the released pool.

right-click: To depress the right button of the mouse while the cursor is over an element of the MOTIF Work Center .

submit update: To update the data on a medium to reflect any chages that may have taken place through the BACKUP utility.

VAULT: The save set management portion of the MOTIF Work Center . Used to find and restore files that you need to retrieve from off-line storage.
