The UNLOAD flag setting requests that the drive be unloaded whenever a volume is dismounted. If the UNLOAD PARAMETER is set to 2 or 3 the server resident information is also reset during the dismount.
THIS LOCK FLAG IS ONLY USED DURING THE INITIAL CREATION OF THE MEDIAS.DAT CONTROL FILE. |
After the initial setup use the
MEDIAS> SET/DEVICE MTA0:/LOCK MEDIAS> SET/DEVICE MTA0:/UNLOCK |
to change the lock flag.
The UNLOAD parameter, if set to 1, will force all DISMOUNT operations to unload the medium and put the device off-line. The default action for labeled media is to leave them on-line.
UNLOAD = O(D), 1, 2, or 3
#1 |
---|
UNLOAD = 0 |
The various settings have the following meanings:
- 0: Do not unload the medium on dismount. With this setting media are left on-line and the next job in the queue will check to see if it requires the use of an already on-line medium. If so the medium will be used without creating a OPCOM request to the operator. If a medium different from the one already on-line is needed it is first unloaded and the operator requested to mount the right one.
- 1: Unload the medium on dismount. With this setting the dismount operation at the end of each job will cause the medium to be unloaded. A subsequent job that requires this same medium will thus create an OPCOM request to the operator.
- 2: Do not unload the medium on dismount, but on an unload, reset the server information. This setting performs all the features of number 0 above, and if the drive is unload either implicitly or explicitly the server information is reset. The server maintains information about what is and was on a drive to allow future jobs to locate where and whether a requested medium is already on a drive. This information is cleared out by this setting.
- 3:This setting performs all the features of number 1 above and resets the server information.
The USER_ADD parameter controls whether users (not an operator or a manager) can use the ADD command and catalog their own medium into the library.
USER_ADD = O (no) or 1 (yes)(D)
#1 |
---|
USER_ADD = 1 |
Each medium in the library is identified either as user added or operator added. Each type of medium can only be removed or renamed by user of equal or higher access rights.
The VDISK parameter specifies where to store VAULT information regarding files backed up from a particular disk. Frequently it is convenient to store VAULT information on the same disk as the files that were backed up. The VAULT system creates on ADR file for each on-line directory file.
VDISK_dddd = location
#1 |
---|
VDISK_DISK$128 = DISK$128:[VAULT] VDISK_DISK$SYS = DISK$128:[VAULT.SYS] |
The VAULT sub-system can potentially create a large number of files in the central MEDIA_LIBRARY location. This parameter can be used to partition this into sections and spread the I/O load across several disk drives.
The VLT_CENTRAL parameter is an alternate way of locating the VAULT database files (nnnnnnnn.ADR). If used, it will override the logical name VAULT_LIBRARY.
VLT_CENTRAL = location
#1 |
---|
VLT_CENTRAL = ALPHA"SYSTEM MANAGER"::DBA0:[SYSMGR] |
This can be especially useful in a DECnet environment where the VAULT database is to be shared. This is an easy way to disguise the actual location from the users.
The VLT_KEEP_ERASED parameter controls the processing of erased file headers in the VAULT database. The normal mode (with this parameter equal to "0") is to reclaim and reuse space occupied by erased file headers. Setting this parameter to a "1" will enable system manager to view and modify these erased records. All reclaim and reuse operations are disabled when this parameter is set to a "1".
VLT_KEEP_ERASED = O(D) or 1
#1 |
---|
VLT_KEEP_ERASED = 1 |
This parameter is used in the MEDIA_LIBRARY:VAULT_REBUILD.COM procedure to allow a VAULT database verify/comparison to made against the MEDIA database.The procedure to do this comparison and implemented in the above mentioned command procedure is as follows:
For more information please printout the above command file.
- Enable processing of erased records by setting the VLT_KEEP_ERASED parameter to "1".
- Mark all files in the VAULT database as erase via the command VAULT/DELETE/ERASE.
- Reverse out the erased mark for all files found in the MEDIA database via the command VAULT/ADD/UNERASE. All entries in the database that were not found in the MEDIA database will remain as erased.
- Disable processing of erased records and let the system reclaim the space.
The purpose of this procedure is to identify what media are
OFFSITE, when media should be sent OFFSITE and when media should be
returned ONSITE. The location of individual media
is determined by examining the status flag OFFSITE and the date fields
SEND_DATE, DURATION and RETURN_DATE.
A.1.1 At the end of each MEDIA BACKUP job
At the end of each BACKUP job, all the media used are marked indicating what date they are to be shipped OFFSITE, and how long they are to stay there. This is done using the FIND and SEND option.
$ OS := @MEDIA_LIBRARY:OFFSITE_STORAGE |
$ OS FIND 'MEDIA_EXT' 'JOB_NAME' MEDIA_SET |
$ OS SEND 'MEDIA_SET' TODAY+7-00 14-00 |
At the end of each MEDIA job for which the media are to be sent offsite, use the SEND option to indicate when they are to be shipped and how long they are to stay there.
$ OS SEND 'MEDIA_EXT' TODAY+7-00 14-00 |
To determine what media to send offsite on a particular day use the REPORT SEND option. Once the media have been sent, all the media can be marked as offsite at a particular location by using the MARK OFFSITE option.
$ OS REPORT SEND 132 PRINTER |
$ OS MARK OFFSITE TODAY WAREHOUSE |
A sample of the type of report generated for the SEND option follows:
ISE, Inc. ISE, Inc. MEDIA V4.0 July 12, 1996, 22:14 Media to send offsite Page 1 sorted by location (MEDIA_OPER_OST_SEND_80) Location External Type Alias Return Store for Label category on days Tape library 9000 TAPE INCREMENTAL;87 1/Aug/96 30 9001 TAPE INCREMENTAL;88 2/Aug/96 30 9002 TAPE MISC_SOFTWARE;1 Not set Not set 9901 TK50 ARCHIVE_ZZ0010;1 Not set Not set |
A.1.4 Returning media onsite
To determine what media to bring back onsite on a particular day, use
the REPORT RETURN option. Once the media have been returned, all the
media can be marked as onsite by using the MARK ONSITE option.
$ OS REPORT RETURN 132 PRINTER |
$ OS MARK ONSITE TODAY LIBRARY |
A sample of the type of report generated for the RETURN option follows:

To determine what media are offsite and at what location, use the REPORT OFFSITE option.
$ OS REPORT OFFSITE 132 PRINTER |
$ OS REPORT ONSITE 132 PRINTER |
